There were only eight other patrons inside the donut shop, and two of them were leaving as he pulled the key out of his ignition, after a moments’ hesitation. He didn’t see any sign of Trudy yet; she’d texted him moments before he left to let him know what kind of car she drove. Checking his hair in the rear view mirror, that same fleeting feeling he had after he hung up with Trudy returned, and he was about to do an about-face when he saw her pull up beside him. She looked at him immediately and tooted her horn. The smile on her face was contagious.

Trudy always had impermeable positivity; it was almost annoying, but most of the time it was refreshing. That’s one of the things that kept them together throughout high school. It wasn’t until a misunderstanding occurred between Desmond and one of Trudy’s block-headed friends that they split up. Monica, for some reason, didn’t like Desmond from day one, and she was passive-aggressive about it until one day when she saw him at the library with another girl, his cousin from out of town, and she took it upon herself to muddle their relationship.

Trudy and Monica had always been best friends, so Monica let on only to Desmond that she didn’t like him. To this day he still didn’t know why. But it was too late; after Monica snitched on Desmond, Trudy wouldn’t listen to his side of the story. By then the school year had ended, and weeks later, Trudy and Anthony got together. By the middle of the next school year, the truth came out when Trudy saw a family photograph posted on Desmond’s Facebook page, that she realized what had really happened.

Crushed, Desmond didn’t fight the battle he knew he couldn’t win. So instead, he just bottled up all his resentment. Adding fuel to his fire, that fall was when his mother left his father for another man. It was no wonder Desmond had issues with women. Until Cassandra. As he sat in his car glancing at the girl who broke his heart many years ago, he wondered to himself if he wasn’t just being a glutton for punishment. If Trudy didn’t trust him then, could she trust him now? Had she changed enough, after all that happened?

“Hey, you. Long time no see.” Trudy said as she got out of her car and walked over to the driver’s side of Desmond’s car. He was more reluctant when she opened her arms to give him a hug. Her face was the same; fair-skinned, blonde, blue eyes, but her hair was longer. Throughout high school she kept it in a bob; now it reached down to her waist. She’d also put on a little weight, which was good, since in Desmond’s opinion, she was always on the skinny side.

“It’s been a long time.” Desmond said, mirroring her comment. He gave her a quick hug and added a pat instead of a rub, being careful to convey anything more than friendship.
